I was raised in a small town in West Texas with two big sisters and a little brother. We four are extremely close and see each other throughout the year even though they all still live in Texas. Important in our lives was going to church, music and being very active in sports and various activities. I was a tomboy, never wore shoes and loved to punt the football with the boys, could catch a football better than most of them, and was a drill team leader and cheerleader in high school and college. I went to college on a music scholarship, and the musical group I sang in traveled and performed throughout the Southwestern states.
My middle name is NETWORK - I love to pair people, fix them up and I have five marriages under my yenta, little matchmaker belt! It gives me such joy to match friends up and see what develops!
For some reason, I am the go-to girl for resources ... Jamie, who is a good window cleaner? Who cuts your hair? Who is a good counselor? A good divorce attorney? Who does your trees, lawn, flowers? Where do you buy that mascara you told me about? Who is a good plumber, painter? What’s your computer guy’s number? Who’s your manicurist? My daughter is graduating and looking for a job. Do you have any leads?
I have assisted in helping so many as far as opening doors. It’s fun to help/connect and it gives me pleasure to see those outcomes. I am such a people person!
I also enjoy writing. My mother was an excellent writer and published a book entitled, I Laughed So
Hard My Stretchmarks Snapped
... Humor and memories of raising four children. It was a very funny book.
Things haven’t changed much for me. I am still going to church, love to keep busy with my charity work and boards, still love to go barefoot, and am very competitive when it comes to sports. Tennis was my first love until I met my husband, who introduced me to the addictive game of golf. Oh, and we will be married for 21 years this July. He has been retired for almost three years, and we enjoy taking walks, doing pilates together, entertaining in our home, and of course, playing golf. Most trips we make are centered around where we want to go play, our most favorite being Scotland where we plan to take our son next summer. We also love to travel and experience other countries.
My Papaw always called me the Energizer Bunny. I have to keep active and I thank my mother for my high metabolism, because I love to eat -- and I am a chocoholic! I have an 18-year-old son, Adam, who is a senior at Kent Denver, and he will graduate and leave us as empty nesters in another year. He has truly been the center of our lives, and the realization that he will be going away is a bit frightening for both of us.
I’ve lived in Denver for almost 25 years and since moving here, have had the opportunity to chair numerous major fundraisers, such as The Children’s Hospital Ball benefitting Children’s Hospital, which I chose to do because my son had been a patient there twice before turning three. I chaired the Western Fantasy, which I chose because my son and I enjoyed serving Meals on Wheels for Volunteers of America when he was younger, The Brass Ring Luncheon for Children’s
Diabetes Foundation, which was one I wanted to do because I was a past president of the Guild and diabetes runs in my family. Another event I chaired was the very first MASK Project Gala where the beneficiary was and still is The Denver Hospice. This one, because I have always enjoyed the elderly, having cared for a friend as well as my mother, who died in hospice care. Kempe Children’s Foundation was the first charity I became associated with because I have an affinity for children who have been abused.
I have chaired various fundraisers for Kempe and am presently on their Board of Directors. I served on Artreach’s board for numerous years, chairing their Festival of Trees twice. Why? Because I LOVE Christmas!!! I begin the decorating on Thanksgiving evening. I also chaired the Beacon Center’s Cherish The Children Gala twice, because I love what they do to change the lives of girls. Presently I am chairing the Le Bal de Ballet, June of 2011, because I adore the Denver Ballet Guild and the programs they support, plus I will be fortunate enough to chair an event where my son will be honored as a Young Man of Distinction along with 77outstanding Young Men and Debutantes. There are many more that I have worked on, chaired, served on boards, etc., but these are some of the major ones that stand out for me.
One aspect of my life that I cherish is my tapestry of girlfriends. Friends from my bible study group, golf, church, charities, neighbors, even from elementary school in Texas (six of us stay in touch quite frequently). It’s like having even more sisters. I feel my contribution of serving those less fortunate is just one way to say thank you for the blessings that have been showered upon me.
